Harriet Tarlo is a poet and academic, working in experimental and open forms on the page and in art spaces. She is interested in place, landscape and environment, modernist and avant-garde poetry, and gender. Her poetry is published by Shearsman, Etruscan and Wild Pansy Press and featured in numerous poetry magazines and journals. She is a Reader in Creative Writing at Sheffield Hallam University.

 

In recent years she has worked in collaboration with artists, most extensively with Judith Tucker, on place-based projects in Yorkshire and on the East coast involving engagement with local people as well as environments. This work has been supported by the Universities of Sheffield Hallam and Leeds, the Arts Council and local agencies.

 

Harriet gives poetry readings, talks, academic papers and writing workshops in at literary festivals; international conferences; place-based residencies; galleries; moors and beaches. Past appearances include the The Aldeburgh Beach Lookout Tower Residency (2015); Maison des Arts de l'Université Libre de Bruxelles, December 2014; North Norfolk Nature Festival (2014); Ledbury Poetry Festival (2013); the Katherine E. Nash Gallery, Regis Centre for Art, Minnesota (2012); Hay Poetry Jamboree (2012) and the Lorine Niedecker Centenary Festival Milwaukee (2003). She was a founding member of ASLE-UKI and has spoken at many conferences for the British, European and American branches of the association.

 

Her academic work appears in volumes by Salt, Palgrave, Rodopi, Bloodaxe and Manchester University Press and in journals such as Pilot, Jacket, English, Journal of Ecocriticism, Classical Receptions and Critical Survey.  She also edits and reviews poetry. She edited The Ground Aslant: An Anthology of Radical Landscape Poetry (Shearsman, 2011). Most recently she edited a special issue of Plumwood Mountain, the international poetry journal of ecopoetics.
